Much like every other home and business, St Mary’s Hospice costs have increased right across the board. Over the past 5 years alone, our operating costs have risen 79% from £3.4 million in 2020/2021 to £6.1 million in 2025/2026.
From the smaller items, e.g, a loaf of bread has gone up approx. 27% in the last five years to a jar of coffee going up a staggering 37%. These are examples of supplies that are used here in the hospice for our in-patient each day. On a larger scale we were impacted by the National Insurance increase last year which added an additional £109,000 to our fixed cost, the National Living Wage has increased on average by 7.4% per year, over the last five years and energy bills have increased exponentially. These increased costs are combined with a rise in the demand for our services. Together, this has resulted in our costs increasing. I hope this explains why we need to increase lottery prices to help bridge the gap we have between what it costs to run the hospice and what we can bring in via voluntary income.
